Amber Patterson is fed up. She’s tired of being a nobody. She deserves more- a life of money and power like the one Daphne Parrish takes for granted. To everyone in the exclusive town of Bishops Harbour, Connecticut, Daphne and her husband Jackson are a couple straight out of a fairytale. Amber’s envy could eat her alive.. if she didn’t have a plan. Amber uses Daphne’s compassion and caring to insinuate herself into the family’s life- the first step in her scheme to undermine her. Before long, she is Daphne’s closest confidante. But a skeleton from her past may undermine everything that she has worked towards, and if she is discovered, her well laid plan could fall to pieces.
I really struggled to read this book. It took my days to read even 100 pages, and I found myself so bored that I was falling asleep during reading, which never happens to me! Firstly, I struggled to connect with Amber’s character. I felt like we never got a chance to get to know her properly. There was no chapter on her background, we only got bits of information here and there. Even her big secret which was mentioned in the blurb got the briefest mention, and most of her motives for befriending Daphne were mentioned in passing or only briefly discussed. The book is split into 3 parts and for me part 1 was probably one of the least exciting stories I’ve read. Personally, I felt like not enough was happening and it was quite repetitive. There was also huge chunks of time skipped over, the book could move on by a few months from chapter to chapter and, for me, I felt that we missed Amber’s plan being put into action because of this. We could have seen more of her integrating herself into the family. If the book had solely been from Amber’s perspective, as part 1 was, I really would have struggled to even give it 1 star. Part 2 gave the book a bit more excitement and more of a story. Because of this, I think it would have been better if the book was told in alternative perspectives from chapter to chapter, rather than two separate parts. If Daphne’s story had been alternated with Amber’s I think I would have enjoyed the book more.

  1. I did like part 2, and I did think the slight twist which it provided was good, but it wasn’t enough to save the book, for me personally. I would not recommend this book, as in my own personal opinion, it did not have an exciting enough storyline and dragged quite a bit. But, of course, I’m sure there are others out there who loved it, so maybe give it a go and see what you make of it!
