After the Nazis invade Poland, Róża and her 5 year old daughter, Shira, escape and are given refuge in a neighbor’s barn. There, they must remain still and quiet day after day, which is especially difficult for a young child who has music in her soul. How long will Henryk and Krystyna be able to keep them safe? And, what happens when Róża must make the impossibly heart wrenching decision to let Shira go in the hopes she’ll have a better chance at surviving?
Set in 1940s Poland during WWII, this story of a mother and young daughter trying to escape the Nazis was heartbreakingly beautiful. I cannot imagine making the decision to be separated from my child, and my heart broke for Róża as she tried to decide what to do. The duo shared a love of music so despite the despair, there was always music to bring them hope. The end was unbearably tense as I yearned for a happy ending for this mother and daughter who had endured so much. Will they find it?
Location: 1941-1945 Poland
